USGS Ecosystems Fisheries: Aquatic and Endangered Resources Program River Science

River Science

The USGS conducts research on structure and function of large river systems with the goal of sustaining and enhancing fisheries resources in concert with other human uses such as navigation, transportation, energy production, irrigation, and human water supply. The USGS studies the ecology and biodiversity of large rivers and gathers data on the effects of impoundment, urbanization, and changing land and water use on fish, other aquatic species, and their riverine habitats. The USGS provides modeling expertise including aquatic habitat mapping and development of decision-support systems; and investigate population dynamics and biological requirements of at-risk species such as native fish, amphibians, and riparian vegetation.
