Christine M. Campbell has worked in the Foreign Language Education (FLED) field for over 30 years directing language programs and test development projects, conducting and publishing the results of research, and teaching foreign languages (Spanish and French) and English as a Second Language. She was a member of the Spanish faculty at the DLIFLC before becoming Test Project Director, at the Directorate of Evaluation and Standardization (ES) in 1987. From 1998 to 2006, she was Dean of Middle East School I. She was then selected as Assistant Provost of ES, where she worked for three years. She became Associate Provost of the Directorate of Language, Science, and Technology, in January 2009.
Her research interests are language assessment and language anxiety. She has written on both topics. Campbell co-authored, with Greg Duncan, "From Theory to Practice: General Trends in Foreign Language Methodology and Their Influence on Language Assessment," in the on-line journal Language and Linguistics Compass (2007) and "Catalyst for Change in Language Assessment in the United States: The National Standards for Foreign Language Learning" for the inaugural issue of Connections, the journal of the Southwest Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (March, 07). She also co-authored, with Teresa Austin "Articulation and Assessment" in New Visions in Foreign and Second Language Education (2004), a product of the New Visions movement promoted by the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages. She was author and co-author of a column in The Modern Language Journal entitled "In Other Professional Journals" from the early 90s until 2008.
Campbell is a member of the Editorial Boards on Applied Language Learning and Dialog on Language Instruction. Aside from her administrative work, scholarship, and editorial work, she has provided service to the profession as member of the Executive Council, the American Council of the Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, the largest language-specific organization in the world with 12,000 members, from 2004-2006. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was named Distinguished Alumna by Purdue University in 1994. Campbell received a Ph.D. Foreign Language Education at Purdue University in 1986.
