Curriculum Development Division (CD)

The Curriculum Development Division (CD) at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) is one of five divisions that make up the Language, Science, and Technology (LST) Directorate. CD creates curricula that reflect both the latest Curriculum Development Principles  in the fields of Foreign Language Education, Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, and TESOL and new requirements from users of its products.

CD is made up of three main departments, the Basic Course Department, the Post Basic Course Department, and the Assessment Department. Additionally, the production capacity of the Curriculum Development Division is further enhanced by highly-qualified personnel of three support departments, Production Coordination, English Editing, and the POM Production Coordination Office.

  • Mission

The mission of CD, Language, Science, and Technology Directorate, is to develop course materials and offer guidance and expertise in curriculum development and design for DLIFLC and DOD use. To that end, it has adopted organizational principles and production methods that maximize output. CD is committed to producing the highest quality products on the cutting edge in the fields of Foreign Language Education, Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, and TESOL.

  • Vision

CD’s vision is to provide a framework of flexible curricula that allows instructors to build a student-centered, collaborative approach to learning. Through the learning environment CD creates, it seeks to encourage instructors to model the effective use of resources, both traditional and technological. In doing so, the curriculum teaches students the habits and discipline of lifelong learning, and gives them the skills to construct individual and group learning environments anywhere they may be stationed.
