About the Development Office
The Library of Congress represents a dynamic collaboration between the public and private sectors. We seek support from individuals, corporations and foundations wishing to play a key role in sharing, cultivating and celebrating knowledge and creativity within America and nations around the world. Our fundraising focuses on support for special acquisitions, preservation of Library collections, cultural and educational outreach programs—both in person and online, as well as exhibitions, publications, conferences and symposia, chairs and fellowships, and much more.
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington established the first Development Office in the Library's history in 1987, the year he was sworn in. Since that time, private donations have totaled approximately $307 million. The success of more than 300 projects and activities that the private sector has helped bring to fruition attests to the synergy that results when the knowledge, talents, contacts, and assets of the private sector are merged with the resources of a great public institution under visionary leadership.
