Missouri River Mainstem Water reallocation Study

The U.S. Army Corps (Corps) has indicated that the  Missouri River Municipal & Industrial Water Storage Reallocation Study will examine whether some amount of the storage included in the six mainstem Missouri River reservoirs for authorized project purposes may be allocated solely to municipal and industrial water supply. The study will also examine the effects of such a reallocation on the authorized purposes and operations of the mainstem reservoirs.

The study area includes the six mainstem reservoirs and the Missouri River proper from Fort Peck Reservoir (Fort Peck, Mont.) to St. Louis, Mo.

Comments from the Governor, Attorney General, and Water Commission on the draft scope of work for the reallocation study are available for review or download.

The US Army Corps of Engineers released Draft Surplus Water Reports and Environmental Assessments for each of the Missouri River mainstem reservoirs. The purpose of the study process is to identify whether surplus water is available to be used by municipal and industrial purposes.

The Water Commission and the Office of the State Engineer have expressed serious concerns about this process and its impact to state water rights. Comments submitted to the Corps detailing those concerns are available for review.

The reports and background information on this process are available at: US Army Corps of Engineers Surplus Water Reports
