Sobre el Mes Nacional de Adopción
Noviembre es el Mes Nacional de Adopción, este mes se aparta cada año para incrementar conocimiento sobre la adopción de niños y jóvenes en el sistema de crianza familiar. La iniciativa de este año durante el Mes Nacional de Adopción se enfoca en profesionales en adopción para encontrar maneras de reclutar y retener padres para los 107,000 niños y adolecentes esperando familias adoptivas que se encuentran en el sistema de crianza familiar. El tema del 2011 es Criando Capacidad para hacer Cambios Duraderos. La iniciativa del Mes Nacional de Adopción apoya la campana nacional de reclutamiento y los anuncios de servicio públicos producidos en colaboración del Ad Council, AdoptUSKids, y el Children's Bureau. La campana de este año se enfoca en el reclutamiento de familias para pre adolescentes (edades de 8-12).
El primer esfuerzo de relevancia para promover la concienciación sobre la necesidad de tener familias adoptivas para los niños que se encuentran en el sistema de cuidado temporal ocurrió en 1976 en el estado de Massachusetts, cuando el Gobernador Michael Dukakis anunció una Semana de la Adopción. La idea ganó popularidad y se propagó a nivel nacional. En 1984, el Presidente Reagan proclamó la primera Semana Nacional de la Adopción, y en 1995, bajo el mandato del Presidente Clinton, la semana se expandió al mes de noviembre completo.
Todos los noviembres, por medio de una Proclamación Presidencial se da inicio a actividades y celebraciones para ayudar a crear conciencia sobre la adopción en toda la nación. Miles de organizaciones comunitarias organizan y celebran programas, eventos y actividades para compartir anécdotas positivas sobre la adopción, disipar mitos, y llamar la atención a los miles de niños que se encuentran en el sistema de cuidado temporal en espera de familias permanentes.
