What are the States doing? Thirty-four states have some type of program initiatives for worker safety and health protection. These programs have a variety of names, including: Accident Prevention Programs, Injury and Illness Prevention Programs, and Comprehensive Safety and Health Programs. The States' programs also come in a variety of forms. They may be voluntary or mandatory, comprehensive or partial, applicable to all employers or only to a subset, and may be provided by the State occupational safety and health agency or through the State's workers' compensation system.
