As Principal Associate Director for Science, Technology, and Engineering, Bishop leads programs to ensure a world-class science and technology base that underpins all the national security missions of the Lab. 

Bishop oversees directorates of Chemistry, Life, and Earth Sciences; Engineering and Engineering Sciences; Experimental Physical Sciences; Information Technology; and Theory, Simulation, and Computation.

Bishop is an internationally recognized leader in theory, modeling, and simulation for condensed matter, statistical physics, and nonlinear science. He has made major contributions in the areas of soliton mathematics and applications, quantum complexity, structural and magnetic transitions, collective excitations in low-dimensional organic, inorganic and biological materials, and complex electronic and structural materials with strong spin-charge-lattice coupling.

Key Facts:

• From 2006-2011, Bishop served as Associate Director for Theory, Simulation, and Computation, encompassing the divisions of Computer, Computational, and Statistical Sciences; High Performance Computing; and Theoretical, as well as the Center for Nonlinear Studies.
• Bishop came to Los Alamos in 1979 as a staff researcher in the Theoretical Division’s Materials and Statistical Physics Theory Group; he became the Director of the Theoretical Division in 1999.
• A naturalized U.S. citizen, Alan was born in Staffordshire, England, and was educated at the University of East Anglia and the University of Cambridge, where he earned a doctorate degree in Theoretical Solid State Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory.  
• Bishop served in postdoctoral research and teaching positions at Oxford, Cornell, and London universities. 
• He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Institute of Physics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science; a recipient of the Department of Energy's E.O. Lawrence Award; a Humboldt Senior Fellow; and a LANL Fellow.
