Frankfurt, Germany, November 17, 1957: Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, right, explains the stone skull he's carrying in his luggage to a customs officer at the Rhein-Main airport. The skull and other artifacts were from Easter Island — the subject of Heyerdahl's book, "Aku-Aku," which was about to be released in Germany. He is best known for an earlier book, "Kon-Tiki," about his 1947 raft expedition that aimed to show that Polynesia could have been settled by Peruvian Indians.

'Big Ben' gets a cleaning, 1983

London, August, 1983: The famed clock tower and London landmark commonly known as Big Ben is wrapped in scaffolding during a project to remove stains caused by air pollution and replace stones that have decayed over the years. The tower is part of the Houses of Parliament; Big Ben is actually the 13-ton bell within its confines. In June, 2012, it was announced that the structure would be formally renamed the Elizabeth Tower, in honor of Queen Elizabeth II on her diamond jubilee.

Berlin, September, 1961: West Berlin motorcycle policemen do headstands as they speed around the track during a show at Olympic Stadium. And to make life a bit more difficult for the driver, the tire has been removed from the sidecar. The annual police extravaganza drew tens of thousands of spectators looking for a break from a tough few weeks that saw the construction of the Berlin Wall.

Wilma Rudolph, Lucinda Williams, Barbara Jones and Martha Hudson, left to right, went on to win the gold medal in the 4x100 relay, and Rudolph — a polio victim as a child — added victories in the 100 and 200 to become the first American woman to win three golds in an Olympiad.

Berlin, February, 1947: A Berliner uses his bicycle to carry home a heavy but precious piece of scavenged firewood as Europe struggles through its coldest winter in many years. Six more people in Berlin reportedly fell victim to the elements the previous day, bringing the city's winter death toll from the combination of freezing and malnutrition to 170. Officials reported that 15,615 people, most of them elderly, required special assistance.

Audie Murphy on a movie set, 1956

Tokyo, July, 1956: World War II hero-turned-actor Audie Murphy is dressed as a correspondent for "Yank" magazine during the filming of "Joe Butterfly," a comedy about U.S. soldiers in Japan during the postwar occupation. Murphy was the United States' most-decorated soldier in World War II, having received 23 military awards including the Medal of Honor. He was born 88 years ago today, on June 20, 1924, and died in a plane crash in 1971.

Saigon, South Vietnam, October 26, 1962: A Vietnamese youth who threw a grenade that killed six people and wounded 38 others at a Republic Day military exhibit near Saigon's City Hall is cornered by bystanders. The assailant, believed to be a member of a Viet Cong assassination cell, was severely beaten by the crowd before he was taken away by police.

Tokyo, August 19, 1973: George Foreman is known to a generation of TV watchers as an affable spokesman for mufflers and grilles, but in 1973 he was the heavyweight boxing champion of the world after beating Joe Frazier for the title. Here, he rides in a parade through the streets of Tokyo in the days leading up to his title defense against Joe "King" Roman, who is riding in the next car. Despite predictions from Roman's camp that "he will eat Foreman up," Foreman flattened Roman in the first round.

Berlin, April, 1987: Soviet guards pose for a photo as they prepare to end their tour of duty at Spandau Prison. For the past 21 years, the prison's sole occupant was loopy Hitler henchman Rudolf Hess; the task of guarding him was rotated among troops from the U.S., France, England and the Soviet Union on a monthly basis. After Hess' death later in 1987, the facility was torn down.

South Korea, 1957: A searchlight mounted on a 2½-ton truck is tested near Camp Casey, South Korea. The 60-inch lights, maintained by the 7th Field Artillery Searchlight Platoon in support of the 7th Infantry Division Artillery, could burn steadily for an hour and 45 minutes and throw a beam 20,000 yards.

Japan would have great difficulty surviving as an island of freedom in a Red takeover of Asian nations."

Beagle was a two-time All-American selection and winner of the Maxwell Trophy as college player of the year for 1954 while playing for the U.S. Naval Academy. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

Berlin, November 12, 1989: Seated next to the recently-opened Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich plays pieces by Bach in honor of East Berliners who died trying to escape to the West. Rostropovich was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1974, and went on to lead the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.

Gaza Strip, February, 1958: A Danish sentry from the United Nations Emergency Force stands guard near a tattered U.N. flag at the Israeli-Egyptian border on the Gaza Strip. The force, representing eight nations and more than 5,600 troops, was established in November, 1956, as part of the U.N.'s response to the Suez crisis.

Murrow is interviewed on AFN during a stop in Wiesbaden, where he received a USAFE briefing before moving on to Tripoli to gather material for a pair of programs on Africa. Murrow noted that the production costs for the Africa reports would be about $250,000, "but it will be well worth it, because I think we in America know too little about Africa, its people, and their problems."

The driver of the truck from C Company, 79th Engineer Battalion swerved to avoid traffic and slammed into one tree after grazing another.
