Frankfurt, Germany, November 17, 1957: Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, right, explains the stone skull he's carrying in his luggage to a customs officer at the Rhein-Main airport. The skull and other artifacts were from Easter Island — the subject of Heyerdahl's book, "Aku-Aku," which was about to be released in Germany. He is best known for an earlier book, "Kon-Tiki," about his 1947 raft expedition that aimed to show that Polynesia could have been settled by Peruvian Indians.
