Dean of Students

The Dean of Students is a senior military officer who acts as a liaison among staff, schools, and military units in all student matters. As Dean of Students, this officer develops and manages policies and regulations governing student academic assessments and makes rulings on student relief and rebuttal actions. This officer also manages the Military Language Instructor program.

Lieutenant Colonel Christiansen is the Dean of Students and Assistant Provost for Undergraduate Education. He is responsible for student issues at the Department of Defense’s largest language training activity, which produces over 3000 military linguists annually.

Lieutenant Colonel Christiansen is an intelligence officer with over 15 years of service. Lt Col Christiansen holds a secondary Air Force specialty
as a Foreign Area Officer, and has scored 2+, 2+ or better on the Defense Language Proficiency Test for five languages. He has deployed to Bosnia twice and has served as interpreter and cultural advisor during approximately 25 foreign delegation visits at locations in the United States, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Bosnia, Croatia and Germany. He received his commission through ROTC at Brigham Young University in 1994. His first assignment after intelligence training at Goodfellow AFB, TX, was as an intelligence systems officer at Barksdale AFB, LA. He then completed an assignment as a human intelligence officer at Elmendorf AFB, AK. Following his assignment in Alaska, Lt Col Christiansen attended graduate school at the University of Kansas, where he earned a master’s degree in Russian and East European Studies. After completing his advanced degree he was assigned to various intelligence units at Ramstein AB, Germany. From Germany Lt Col Christiansen transferred to the United States Air Force Academy, where he was a full-time Russian instructor for one year prior to completing a master’s degree in Leadership and Counseling in preparation for taking command of Cadet Squadron 18. As Cadet Squadron 18’s Air Officer Commanding, Lt Col Christiansen commanded 115 Air Force cadets and two non-commissioned officers in support of the Academy’s mission to educate, train, and inspire lieutenants and future leaders of character for the Air Force and our nation.

Lieutenant Colonel Christiansen was born in Chicago and raised in Maryland. He is married and has two sons.
