Academic Support Center

The Academic Support Center (ASC) is an academic resource provider for Continuing Education (CE) faculty and students enrolled in our residential, extension and distance-learning programs. Our team of Academic Support Specialists assists in the design and delivery of training to meet faculty professional development requirements specifically related to facilitating second language acquisition at higher proficiency levels. They also provide individual mentoring to faculty and students, as required.

The ASC supports CE’s residential, extension and distance-learning students in part by training faculty to better understand how individual student personality types, sensory preferences, learning styles and other affective variables can influence a language learner’s progress toward proficiency goals at higher levels in specific languages. Academic Specialists also routinely conduct group and individual student consultations in order to recommend personalized learning strategies and ways to overcome challenges that frequently stand in the way of higher levels of foreign language proficiency, such as dealing with test-taking anxiety or poor baseline English skills.

As subject-matter specialists in the area of proficiency-oriented language acquisition, the ASC works to apply and evaluate new and innovative methodologies and resources for the delivery of language instruction. They also proactively participate in the development, review, evaluation and revision of refresher, intermediate, advanced and dialect-conversion course lesson plans, syllabi and programs (including immersion programs), while also ensuring that proficiency-oriented, content-based and culturally-informed teaching methodologies are implemented to the greatest extent possible. ASC Specialists also assist faculty in ensuring that technology is appropriately integrated and employed in the classroom environment.
