Washington, Jun 14, 2011 -

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement applauding increased funding for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI):

“According to the World Health Organization, GAVI’s work has helped prevent 5 million future deaths since 2000, and this investment is critical to its goal of saving 4 million more lives by 2015.  Vaccines are one of the most effective, cost-efficient ways to protect against preventable death and reduce the likelihood of future illness and disability.  For children across the world, these funds truly represent a brighter, healthier future.”

BACKGROUND:

On May 31, 2011, Congressman Van Hollen and 61 of his colleagues sent a letter to the U.S. Agency for International Development in support of this funding.  To read the full text of the letter, click here.
