Second Amendment

Second Amendment

The Second Amendment to our Constitution reads, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This Amendment protects gun-owners from an overzealous government. I have always supported the right of law-abiding citizens to own guns because self-protection is a vital aspect of freedom. Our founders, recognizing the importance of this, codified it directly into our Bill of Rights.

It is my view that our Second Amendment must be protected and preserved for our children and grandchildren. In the 111th Congress, I cosponsored the Second Amendment Enforcement Act, to restore Second Amendment rights to the citizens of Washington D.C. I am also a proud member of the bipartisan Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, a group committed to fish and wildlife conservation and the preservation of opportunities to hunt, fish and trap.

I also recently supported the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011.” This bill would provide a national standard in accordance with which nonresidents of a state may carry concealed firearms in the state. This legislation would create the structure so that permit holders can adhere to a national standard, and lawfully carry in any state.
