Metalcasting is among the most energy-intensive industries in the United States. The heating and melting of metals consumes large amounts of energy; an average of 55% of total energy costs can be attributed to melting. [Bates 1997] According to the most recent Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECS), about 103 trillion Btu of energy was consumed by NAICS 331511 (iron foundries) in 1998. Total industry energy consumption was 236 trillion btu, representing about 1% of all U.S. manufacturing energy use. [MECS 1998]
