MEMORANDUM TO FEDERAL AGENCY CONTACTS: Information about Records Management Services Event, March 24, 2011

For the past several years, NARA has been working on a project called RMS - "Records Management Services," which we hope will become key in demonstrating NARA's intense interest in new technologies and methodologies to accomplish more comprehensive, more flexible, and less expensive electronic records management.

The RMS project began as a effort to determine the viability of building a software specification and associated tools through which RM software could be implemented in a "service-oriented" model. Software implemented through services can be often easier to build and deploy than traditional software solutions.

RMS had its beginnings through the work of a cross-governmental group of Federal records managers, led by NARA. NARA took these initial RM specifications to the Object Management Group (OMG), a consortium of commercial, academic, and government organizations that develop and enhance interoperable and reusable standards applicable to variety of industries.

Through the work of NARA and the OMG, RMS has now reached the point where it is a viable, implementable specification and several software vendors have been using RMS to build prototype solutions for a variety of RM scenarios. These scenarios include the use of RMS for legacy systems whose records have not been otherwise managed, and the use of RMS for auto-classification of electronic data. At the OMG event, these and many other exciting possibilities for the application of this technology will be discussed.

The event detailed in the attached is your invitation to attend this OMG event on March 24, 2011, and to hear about the many potential solutions that RMS may provide as NARA continues the "push the envelope" for twenty-first century electronic records management!
