Fort Bragg's new Irwin Intermediate School opened in August, and the dedication ceremony will take place on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 9:30 a.m.

Meeting the demand for Fort Bragg's increasing population, 570 students attend the  second through fifth grades and the school employs 21 classroom teachers.

Dr. Linda Curtis, Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools/Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Cuba Senior Civilian and Deputy Director for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment will be the guest speaker. Also present will be Dr. Emily Marsh, North Carolina Schools Department of Defense Education Activity superintendent.

"This dedication ceremony is important for a number of reasons, first, it puts the official 'stamp' on our school that truly verifies that the years of planning, preparation and facilitation have truly come to fruition," said Charles Council, Irwin Intermediate School principal. "It also signifies, officially, that we have come together as one large learning community to best serve the children of our military heroes."

Irwin serves more than 570 students in second through fifth grades and has 21 classroom teachers.

"It is very nice that we are seeing money appropriated by Congress to improve our DoDEA school facilities so evident here at Fort Bragg." said Michael Thornburg, North Carolina Schools Department of Defense Education Activity education operations chief.  "We are very thankful that our community is one of the first to benefit from this appropriation."

Irwin School is named in memory of Lt. Gen. Stafford LeRoy Irwin, who served as post commander of Fort Bragg from July 11, 1946 to October 31, 1948, and retired from the Army in 1952 with 37 years service.
