Filton College head football coach Benjamin Herod emailed Friday that two-time all-conference tackle Elliott McMahon was selected the school’s male athlete of the year.
McMahon, who’s been playing football for just two years since transferring to the Bristol, England, based school, was Filton’s first football player to win the award, according to Herod.

Aviano-based standouts Meghan Haas and Elizabeth Hoeltje were voted to the six-woman all-tournament team Tuesday as the 2012 Armed Forces volleyball championships ended at Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill., Armed Forces sports director Ken Polk reported in a Wednesday e-mail.
The performances of Haas, an outside hitter, and Hoeltje, a defensive specialist, helped the Air Force women to the team title with a 6-0 record in the four-day event. The Air Force lost just one set, 24-26 in a 3-1 victory over the Army on Sunday, in winning its six matches.

Ramstein graduate Forrest Kamperman, who teamed with Aryan von Eicken to finish second in last fall’s European tennis championships, has been selected as one of 20 members of the Brown Fellows Program for the Class of 2012-2016, according to a news release from the James Graham Brown Foundation.
According to the Foundation, Brown Fellows, who receive full tuition and room and board for four years along with funding for international travel and study, are selected on the basis of “scholastic attainment, intellectual leadership, visionary thinking and exemplary community involvement.”

Wayne Dawkins, who capped his stellar three-sport career at Heidelberg by winning European gold medals in the long and triple jumps last month, has committed to run track at Wingate University in Wingate, N.C., his father Eric reported in an email.
Dawkins, a linebacker who was voted the defensive MVP of the 2010 Division I championship game and who averaged 10.5 points and five rebounds per game for the undefeated 2012 European D-I basketball champions, earned 12 of Heidelberg’s 2011 D-I-winning 102 points by placing second in the triple and fourth in the long jump as a junior. Covering a meet-winning 46 feet, 2.5 inches in the triple and 21-8 in the long jump this season, Dawkins almost doubled his 2011 point total with 20 points, but Vilseck outscored the Lions 115-99.5 for the boys’ team title.
Wingate, an NCAA Division II school located 30 miles from Charlotte, has fielded a track team for just two seasons, Eric Dawkins reported. But the Bulldogs are set to inaugurate a completely new track later this summer, and the school is ranked third nationally in D-II for producing academic All-Americans.

When he accepts his diploma from Heidelberg High School at the city's Stadthalle on Friday night, Kevin Gray will complete a feat all-but-unprecedented for students in DODDS-Europe. Unlike everyone else in the hall with him, Gray will be winding up a 13-year run at Heidelberg DODDS schools.
And even though Gray, a strong student as well as an all-star athlete, arguably suffered in obtaining a football scholarship because of his location, he’ll be walking down the aisle with no regrets.
