Becoming a Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument Trail Steward is an exciting way to become a supporter of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument/Soda Mountain Wilderness while exploring the monuments trails. From June through mid-September Trail Stewards actively assist monument staff with trail management on the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail and trails within the Soda Mountain Wilderness. Trail stewards participate in trail maintenance activities such as clearing the trails for use, using hand tools to improve the tread surface, and completing trail condition assessments. Trail Stewards also help teach visitors the importance of "Leave No Trace," a program encouraging people to reduce their impacts while recreating in the outdoors as well as distributing maps and other monument information.

Trail Condition Assessment

Trail condition assessments help identify needed trail work as well as in prioritizing work for the field season. Condition assessments can be done independently by Trail Stewards any time they feel like going for a hike.

Lone Pine Trail Hike - Saturday June 2, 2012

In celebration of National Trails Day, Siskiyou Mountain Club and the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument will be leading a hike along a portion of the Lone Pine Trail in the Soda Mountain Wilderness. The Lone Pine Ridge Trail was proposed in the final Soda Mountain Wilderness Stewardship Plan. This trail when completed will access deep into the Soda Mountain Wilderness offering picturesque views of Mount Shasta, Pilot Rock, and access to diverse landscapes within the wilderness. Trail work is scheduled to begin in July with Siskiyou Mountain Club holding two weekend wilderness spike trail work events.

On Saturday, June 2nd we will meet at Shop N' Kart, 2268 Ashland St, in Ashland, OR at 8:00am to carpool to the trailhead, an approximately 40 minute drive. From here we will hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) to where the Lone Pine Ridge Trail departs the PCT. We will hike south on Lone Pine Ridge, with expansive views to the north, south, east, and west. Plan on hiking 5 to 7 miles. We should arrive back to Shop N' Kart by 4pm. Please wear sturdy boots or shoes, dress appropriately for the weather conditions, and bring a lunch and plenty of water. Please email or call Nick Schade at NSchade@blm.gov or 541-618-2281 if you have any questions.
