Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region

Tips

  • Ticks and mosquitoes are residents of the refuge. With the presence of Lyme disease in the area, it is recommended that insect repellant be applied when exploring the island. Pants tucked into socks and shoes instead of sandals can also help prevent exposure to ticks and mosquitoes.

  • After each of your island expeditions, conduct a tick check to ensure that there are no unwanted hitchhikers on you.

  • Exposure to the sun can be harmful, so don't forget to protect your skin with sunscreen. A hat and sunglasses can also help protect you from the sun.

  • When participating in a guided walk, wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
