Ozark cavefish


The Ozark cavefish (Amblyopsis spelaea) was listed as a federally threatened species in 1984. It is a small, blind, pinkish-white fish that lives in cave streams and springs in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. It senses motion given off by organisms in the water to locate food. Some threats to the Ozark cavefish include water pollution and changing water tables.

A spring located near the Neosho, MO, National Fish Hatchery was found to have Ozark cavefish. It was acquired in 1994-1995 in order to protect the threatened cavefish that live there.
