When Melanie Goff, president of a small, minority, women-owned business, needed to find new business prospects in the federal government, she turned to Freda Hopper. Hopper has been working with small businesses looking to get their foot in the door to federal contracting as a small business program manager since 1998, serving small businesses from her position at Oak Ridge Operations Office in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

At the Department of Energy, we are committed to supporting small and disadvantaged businesses. You can see this commitment through the various programs created within the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, which is a part of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity.  Small businesses are an extremely important and valuable asset to our country. With this in mind, the Department of Energy created the Annual Secretarial Small Business Awards Program to recognize the outstanding work of small and disadvantaged businesses in furthering the mission of the Department.

Secretary Chu met with 160 small business CEOs July 26 at the Minority Business RoundTable (MBRT) in Washington, D.C. MBRT is a national nonprofit organization that represents African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and women CEOs of the top minority-owned companies in America. The organization provides companies an avenue to expand their access to capital and contracting opportunities. The professional relationships that MBRP formed over the years has tremendously impacted the partnerships established between the federal government and the MBRT entrepreneurs.

The Office of Economic Impact and Diversity's Dot Harris recently met with youth from Tribal Nations around the U.S. to discuss the benefits of STEM education.
