The Industrial Energy Efficiency and Combined Heat and Power (IEE/CHP) Working Group is helping the State and Local Energy Efficiency Action Network (SEE Action) address energy efficiency in the U.S. manufacturing sector by providing guidance on model programs and policies that support industrial efficiency and implementation of CHP. The working group has developed a blueprint for action that drives the following goals:

Achieve a 2.5% average annual reduction in industrial energy intensity through 2020
Install 40 gigawatts (GW) of new, cost-effective CHP by 2020.

The IEE/CHP Working Group has set these first-year goals for 2011:

Achieve 0.5% reduction in industrial energy intensity
Install 2 GW of new, cost-effective CHP.

Working Group Scope

The scope of activities for IEE/CHP Working Group activities includes:

Industrial manufacturing processes in large-, medium-, and small-sized industries and varying levels of energy intensity
System-level and process energy efficiency, including energy intensity (as a measure of efficiency) and use implementation of CHP technologies.

Priority Solutions and Actions

To achieve its goals, the IEE/CHP Working Group focuses on three priority areas:

Drive demand for industrial energy efficiency and CHP
Build the workforce and promote efficient operations and investment
Move the market toward adoption of CHP technologies.

Impact on Energy Efficiency

According to the Energy Information Administration, the U.S. industrial sector will consume 41.6 quadrillion (quads) Btu of primary energy in 2020, in a business as usual scenario. However, meeting the goal of 2.5% annual reduction in energy intensity and adoption of 40 GW of CHP would have a significant impact on reducing this expected consumption, including:

Saving 10.4 quads of energy by 2020
Capturing 78% of the total 13.4 quads estimated potential energy savings in the industrial sector by 2020.
