Integrated Diabetes Education Program (IDEP) - Transition

In 2010, the IHS Division of Diabetes changed the focus of the Integrated Diabetes Education Recognition Program (IDERP).

Purpose of the Transition

With this transition the IHS Division of Diabetes is implementing ways to be more focused, efficient, cost-effective and collaborative to reach more Native communities. This is in support of our long-term mission and the priorities of the IHS Director. The goals of the this transition are to improve quality of care and access to care and to make all our work accountable, transparent, fair and inclusive.

Changing the Focus from IDERP to IDEP

There are two major changes:

  1. The Division of Diabetes is no longer a national accreditation organization (NAO) for outpatient diabetes self-management education (DSME) services.
    • Current IDERP accredited programs have the opportunity to choose to maintain their accreditation through either:
    • IDERP programs will benefit from the streamlined, flexible application processes that are offered by both of these accreditation organizations.
    • IDEP staff will provide guidance and technical assistance during the transition to either ADA or AADE accreditation.
    • Please continue to check this webpage for further details as they become available in the future.
  2. IDEP will focus on training and accreditation-preparedness to improve all diabetes education programs within the Indian Health system.
    • All these diabetes programs will have the following:
      • access to patient and staff education resources, tools and training opportunities, due to a redirection of human resources and financial resources;
      • technical assistance with developing quality DSME programs and
      • guidance and technical assistance with the application process for either ADA-ERP or AADE-DEAP, for programs that would like to apply for accreditation.
