Role of Economists at the Census Bureau
Expectations
Conduct research that
- Improves Census Bureau surveys and data collection
- Answers questions using Census Bureau microdata that cannot be addressed with publicly available data
Participate actively in Census' dynamic community of research economists
Conduct research in the following areas
- Business dynamics: industrial organization, productivity, trade, entrepreneurship, innovation
- Labor dynamics: employment activity and worker flow
- Income dynamics: earnings, taxation, assets, poverty, and program participation
- Health: disability, health status, and insurance markets
- Household dynamics: housing, family structure, education, and migration
Research Environment
Economists are encouraged to
- Publish in respected peer–reviewed journals
- Present at domestic and international conferences
Research is carried out by permanent staff, approved research associates, fellows, and interns
The Census Bureau hosts multiple seminar series with speakers from academia and other government agencies
