Grain Handling
Hazards
There are numerous safety and health hazards associated with grain handling operations. If workers are unaware of the potential hazards in their work environment, they are more vulnerable to injury. The following references describe the health hazards associated with grain handling and how to recognize them.
- Hazard Alert: Dangers of Engulfment and Suffocation in Grain Bins. OSHA, (2011, August).
- Grain fumigant. OSHA Hazard Information Bulletin (HIB), (1984, March 14). The use of chemical grain fumigants for the control of insect infestation of stored grain can result in hazardous exposures to workers involved in the handling of both fumigants and fumigated grain. Fumigants commonly used for insect control on stored grain include methyl bromide, phosphine, and carbon disulfide.
