Dr. Mary Satterfield

Mary Satterfield is a scientific advisor in the Material Measurement Laboratory where she specializes in educational outreach. Among her responsibilities are development and leadership of the NIST Summer Institute for Middle School Science Teachers, a two-week long workshop with a combination of hands-on activities, lectures, tours, and visits with scientists in their laboratories.

Dr. Satterfield came to NIST in 2001 for an NRC postdoctoral fellowship in the Analytical Chemistry Division after completing a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin. For several years, Dr. Satterfield worked on protein and small molecule reference methods and Standard Reference Materials before joining the Biochemical Science Division, where she was involved in the development of reference methods and materials for microarray scanner quality assurance. In 2007, Dr. Satterfield became a scientific advisor to Dr. Laurie Locascio, chief of the Biochemical Science Division. Dr. Satterfield now advises Dr. Locascio in her role as director of the Material Measurement Laboratory.
