About Bioenergy

Multiple environmental and economic benefits can be gained from supporting expansion of a biobased products industry in the U.S. if care is taken to ensure that biomass resources are selected, developed, supplied and converted in ways that are sustainable, reliable, safe and profitable for the producers.

The Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's Biomass Program works with industry, academia and national laboratories on a balanced portfolio of research in biofeedstocks and conversion technologies. At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, bioenergy research addresses all the individual components of the bioenergy supply chain as well the cross-cutting topic of bioenergy sustainability. ORNL also disseminates bioenergy information to the public and provides decision makers with tools to better understand complex bioenergy systems and their potential and current impacts.
