Ambassador Morningstar’s Statement on Recent Protests in Azerbaijan
We have seen reports of public unrest in the Azerbaijani town of Ismayilli on January 24, resulting in injuries and destruction of property, including the burning of a private hotel and the local executive’s private house. Police subsequently dispersed a January 26 demonstration in Baku called in sympathy with Ismayilli residents, and several dozen protesters were detained. »

Statement by Ambassador Morningstar on the Preservation of Cultural Heritage
Since my arrival in Baku as Ambassador, I have made an effort to become more familiar with this wonderful country, its people and history. Most recently, I traveled to Nakhchivan, and I have also made visits to Lenkoran, Sheki, Oguz, Quba and Lahij. It has been an opportunity to see this country’s diverse cultural heritage up close, an experience that I think is important for anyone coming to live and work in Azerbaijan. »

White House Spokesperson Tommy Vietor on Azerbaijan’s Decision to Pardon Ramil Safarov
President Obama is deeply concerned by today’s announcement that the President of Azerbaijan has pardoned Ramil Safarov following his return from Hungary. Safarov confessed to the murder of Armenian Army officer Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest in 2004, and was serving a life sentence in Hungary for this brutal crime. Statement by Patrick Ventrell, Acting Deputy Spokesperson of State Department: Pardon of Azerbaijani Soldier
The United States is extremely troubled by the news that the President of Azerbaijan pardoned Azerbaijani army officer Ramil Safarov, who returned to Baku today following his transfer from Hungary. Mr. Safarov had been serving a life sentence in a Hungarian jail for murdering Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan during a 2004 NATO training event in Budapest.
