Faculty

The faculty members of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy are experienced, dedicated and distinguished educators who view teaching and mentoring their students as more than a job or career—indeed, it is their mission.

One of the Academy’s strengths is the level of personal attention students receive from faculty. Cadets enjoy a 8:1 student to faculty ratio. Professors do their own teaching, are readily available and eager to work with Cadets individually and in groups. The commitment continues outside the classroom with faculty members acting as advisors, and with faculty members who volunteer as team and club coaches and as mentors for research and internships.

Equally impressive are the individual scholarly efforts of the125-member faculty. Last year members presented at 100+ conferences, authored 89 papers, 78 journal articles and nearly 20 books/chapters.

The elite academic community of the Coast Guard Academy includes both civilian and military faculty members in roughly equal parts. Notably, 92% of all Coast Guard Academy faculty members are full-time which is significantly higher than the national averages for private and public 4-year colleges, which are 61% and 75% respectively.*
