The Coast Guard Academy has identified three strategic themes with regard to sustainability. The Academy’s strategy for sustainability encompasses the Academy community, operations, and academics. The themes were adopted by the Academy and serve as a center point of the Academy’s sustainability efforts going forward. Community The Academy shall serve as environmental stewards and lead by example both locally and Coast Guard wide. We shall reduce, reuse and recycle in as many ways as possible; focusing on the long-term benefits of the initiatives despite the potentially higher initial costs.
Operations The Academy is committed to reducing its environmental footprint; operating in a responsible manner; and helping the Academy and others address environmental challenges. We will develop indicators for sustainability to enable the monitoring, reporting and continuous improvement of the various campus programs.
Academics The Academy proactively supports the integration and infusion of sustainability issues as opportunities for faculty, staff, and student academic research. We shall identify appropriate ways for faculty and student research to be incorporated into on-campus sustainability initatives.
