The Destination is Gratitude

"I was the eyes and ears on the ground for the logistics managers, and what I saw and heard made me so thankful I could actually help save lives."

My job was to help coordinate the inflow of millions of pounds of donated food from around the world after the quake. I oversaw the transporting and distributing of food supplies to thousands of desperate families. I checked out devastated areas — formerly neighborhoods — and determined the food needs of the residents who survived. I reported on logistical bottlenecks and advised my supervisor on the best routes to take, and when to take them, so the food wouldn't go to waste or become spoiled.

Whenever I could, I personally helped distribute the food, and I was nourished by the experience. Now, as my career as a Defense Department logistician takes on speed, I've been able to use what I learned in Haiti practically every day.
