Language Assessment
In countries where English is not the primary language, candidates must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and have the results reported to the Coast Guard Academy by the March deadline. In certain situations and with approval from the U.S. Coast Guard Office of International Affairs, the English Comprehension Level (ECL) exam may be administered in lieu of the TOEFL.

TOEFL: A minimum score of 560 (paper-based test) or 220 (computer-based test) is recommended. The Coast Guard Academy reporting code for the TOEFL is 5807; additional information about the TOEFL exam can be found on the TOEFL website.

ECL:
A minimum score of 80 is required on the ECL exam.
