Explore, Learn and Connect with Your Local Estuary

We invite you to experience all the beauty and the wonderful outdoor experiences our estuaries can offer. An estuary is an irreplaceable gift of nature that provides food, jobs, recreational opportunities and the natural resources we all come to enjoy when we visit our coasts.

You might visit or be living next door to a Reserve teeming with life and not even know it. In fact, if you’re boating on the Intracoastal Waterway, or sunning on a beach, or driving along the coast, or surfing or fishing in the ocean within three miles of the shore, or admiring the birds or dunes and marshes, or participating in any other activities near these rivers, you may be in a National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Reserves provide excellent  locations that serve as “living classrooms," applying real-world contexts for learning and stimulating “hands-on/minds-on” educational opportunities.
