The U.S. Department of Education will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open an art and writing exhibit displaying works by student winners from the Military Child Education Coalition program at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Education Building, 400 Maryland Ave. S.W., in Washington, D.C. Deputy Chief of Staff Eric Waldo and Director of the Student Art Exhibit Program Jacquelyn Zimmermann will welcome the students and their art and writing to the Department’s headquarters lobby, where it will be displayed through August. Robert Frankel, director of Museums and Visual Arts for the National Endowment for the Arts, and Patricia Shinseki, member of the Military Child Education Coalition Board, will also make remarks. Art and writing created by children from military bases in the United States, Puerto Rico, England, Germany, Spain, and Japan will be included in the exhibit, titled America’s Children. Following a presentation by the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard and the national anthem by a member of the Navy Band, student artists from Ft. Meade, Md., will perform music and poetry.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Student Art Exhibit Program features visual art created by students in U.S. and international schools, and provides students and teachers the opportunity to display creative work from the classroom in a highly public space. The exhibits also celebrate and recognize the importance of arts education while providing Department employees and visitors an artistic environment created by talented elementary and secondary students around the world.
