The James R. Squire Office of Policy Research in the English Language Arts

The James R. Squire Office of Policy Research compiles research and policy for both policymakers and teachers on behalf of NCTE.  Primarily in policy research briefs that accompany NCTE's Council Chronicle and this online space, the Squire Office relates the latest in policy and research on pertinent issues.

Research Summaries - "What We Know"

The Squire Office offers capsule summaries of recent, relevant research articles, books, and reports in multiple areas of interest to teachers -- including assessment, multiple literacies, professional development, and the achievement gap.

Click here go to the main "What We Know" page to access citations, capsule summaries,  abstracts, and links to online previews or full-text versions (when available) of research publications.

NCTE Policy Briefs

The Squire Office has also published several printed Policy Briefs which incorporate a wide-ranging amount of research findings grouped around topics of interest in contemporary educational concerns.  These 3-4 page briefs (in PDF format) offer issue overviews, debunk common myths and misunderstandings, summarize current research findings, and offer recommended strategies for teachers in each area. Topics include Adolescent Literacy, 21st Century Literacies, Writing Now, English Language Learners, and Writing Instruction.
