Take Part in the National Gallery of Writing

9/29/10: Senate passed RES.668 "expressing support for the designation of October 20, 2010, as the "National Day on Writing!"

How Did You Celebrate the 2nd National Day on Writing, October 20, 2010?

In the National Gallery of Writing we’re collecting all kinds of writing from people from all walks of life—people just like you.  Submit your stories, poems, recipes, emails, blogs, even audio, video, and artwork. And tell us below what you did in your school, library,office, or community to commemorate the day!

Want more information on contributing to the National Gallery?  Learn more about submitting your writing and about starting a gallery.

For those having trouble getting started, NCTE has created Tips for Writers and made some sample writings available.  For those needing inspiration, popular authors and celebrities, such as Sarah McCoy who tells us "a day without writing is like a day without food," talk about writing.

Established by NCTE, the National Gallery and the National Day

  • highlight the remarkable variety of writing we engage in today;
  • provide a collection for research on whether writing today has risen to new highs or sunk to new lows; and
  • help us help others to write better.

The Writing Center at Purdue University Calumet celebrated by opening a gallery online, by hanging quotations on writing by writers all around the Writing Center, and by wishing tutees a "Happy National Day on Writing" and handing them a Writing Center pencil.

At DePaul University's Center for Writing-based Learning, we asked the community to fill out posters about who they are as writers and what types of writing they do. Students, faculty, and staff members sent their responses in ahead of time, or stopped by a table to create their own on site. The premade posters can be found in our gallery at http://galleryofwriting.org/galleries/2446159 . Writers were also invited to take part in a scrabble game between our Loop and Lincoln Park campuses, pitting passers by and tutors against one another at each location. We also combined our support for Human Dignity week by giving out purple t-shirts that said "I write with pride," and asked participants to make a statement on our Declaration for Human Dignity. These activities were wildly successful, and may form the groundwork of NDW celebrations at DePaul for years to come.
