Mad Hatter's very real problem

4:25 PM Thu, Feb 18, 2010 |
Letter to the Editor    E-mail  |  Suggest a blog topic

Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter in I'm a little nonplussed about the newest version of Alice in Wonderland; Tim Burton is not known for kiddy fare. Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter looks like Ronald McDonald on acid.

The problem is that Mad Hatter's disease was a real workplace safety issue during the 19th century. While miners got black lung disease from prolonged exposure to coal dust and millers got white lung disease from flour, hat makers got Mad Hatters from prolonged exposure to mercury, used to turn fur into felt. This heavy metal would build up in their systems, causing trembling, loss of coordination, slurred speech, loosening of teeth, memory loss, depression, irritability and anxiety.

What will kiddy fantasy stories use next: characters with PTSD?

Stephen D. Spotswood, Plano

The Hatter is weirdly hot! Ronald McD could never, under any circumstances, be hot.

How about kiddy fantasy stories with lepers that get healed and people being brought back from the dead?

Oh, wait...

Get over yourself Mr. Spotswood.

I'm going to burn my Lewis Carroll books tonight!

Mr. Spotswood -

"Alice in Wonderland" was never meant to be a "kiddy" book. Just as "The Wizard of Oz" isn't a "kiddy" book either.

It's been said that Alice in Wonderland was some kind of allegory for Victorian era politics.

I think this is going to be a more accurate interpretation of Alice actually. Any adult should know Alice in Wonderland was never meant to be a child's move. Disney did that.

what about 'little red riding hood' ?? i mean it's a discreet little tale about a wolf stealing a young child virginity! doesn't sound like thats supposed to be for kids either! and how about how Santa is no longer allowed to so 'Ho Ho Ho' or how the nursery ryhme is now 'bah bah rainbow sheep' kids never really understand any of that, but thes days we have cartoons with that much violence why is that not getting picked on?
omg i sound so old here. all this coming from a 16 year old... society is pretty messed up

I will gladly take my children to see this movie as the reality in their daily lives seems to be getting worse everyday; bad economy, freaks that fly airplanes into buildings, dismal employment outlook for the summer, sky high college tuition and reality TV everywhere. Now that's disturbing.
Bring on the fantasy, baby!

Little Red Riding Hood is an allegory for a briss.

Mr. Spotswood, you've just now noticed that Alice in Wonderland is not a children's story?

You might want to start paying more attention.

OK, Mr. Spotswood. I suppose you'd object to Lord of the Rings because it might lead to midgets being used to perform dangerous tasks.

When you counter by saying that makes no sense, let me then state: that makes it the perfect response to your letter.

Johnny Depp isnt a clown on acid! This movie will rock out loud just because you have a nasty thing to say about doesnt mean you have to spread it over the internet to other people so dont say things that you dont want other people to frek out about Johnny Depp because surly he's SMOKING hot

A little "nonplussed"? Do you also hate God when it rains?

What an idiot. Unbelieveable how morons have gotten a voice since the advent of the internet.

Disney can't get a break these days!!
A couple of months ago Rod Dreher got on a diatribe about Disney's"The Frog Princess"
because of how"The Characters Went Looking For Help From The'Bad' Voodoo Doctor by Seeking Help From The'Good'Voodoo Doctor Instead of Seeking Help From The Catholic Church!!".

Makes me wonder if Mr.Spotswood is really Rod Dreher via a Nom De Plume!!!

Now before some of you out there start hollering about"Political Correctness",just as many Religious Conservatives were raising hell and sticking a chunk under it long before the PC types caught om!!!

Anyway, how about these recent Disney movies:
"Cars".Except for the long forgotten 60's sitcom
"My Mother The Car"and David"The Antichrist"Hasslehoff and"Knight Rider"from the 80's,Cars Aren't Supposed To Talk Let Alone Have Human Emotions!!

"Ratatouille".Rats aren't supposed to be in the kitchens of any restraunt let alone know how to be
gourmet chefs!!!!

And let's not forget how-according to'Dr.'-And I use the term very loosely-James Dobson and Focus On The Family claimed that"Spongebob Squarepants Was Part Of The(So Called)HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA!!"
back there five years ago!!!

Now personally,I thought Spongebob Squarepants was part of the Drug Culture:
Spongebob's Definitely Been Doing a Lot Of Speed.
Patrick's Been Smoking Waaaayyy Too Much Reefer.
And Squidward's Definitely Hooked On Oxycontinin!!!

Finally,try this one on for size-In England,Cartoon Network won't show the 1950
Tom&Jerry Cartoon"Texas Tom"because there's a scene where Tom rolls a smoke and blows a heart shaped smoke ring in order to impress a female cat!!

Their reasoning:"Children Might Think Smoking's Glamourized!!".
Now look, that Tom&Jerry Cartoon was made 60 years ago!!While I understand about some of today's cartoon characters like Spongebob or Pokemon smoking on their shows,Tom&Jerry Cartoons were released theatrically to be shown before a feature film long before they were shown on TV!!!

And I hardly think that just because a five year old out there watches some of the glorious comic mayhem like Tom and Jerry dished out not to mention Tex Avery's frantic mayhem from the 40's and 50's and sees a character smoking doesn't mean Little Junior or Missy are gonna pick up the habit!!

How about going after Self Styled Preachers and Their Crackpot Churches like Plano's Doyle Davidson and their affect on Mentally Ill Women??

Because some Self Styled Preacher preyed upon gullible mentally ill women like Deena Schlosser or Andrea Yates by claiming they needed"An Exorcism Because Theyr'e Possessed By Demons!!"
they wound up murdering their precious children!!

Yet I've never heard of any child being murdered by watching Tom and Jerry;Spongebob or any other
cartoon character while more children have been murdered because of religious zealotry!!!
