My experience is that people can get clean and sober if they have a belief in some higher power. If they have had a strong connection with Christ or Allah, that works. Others don't have a traditional religious connection so make their higher power, the group, or "spirit" or the goddess or some other form. I don't know if there are any studies about which type of higher power is most effective.

It seems like it would be "easier"/more efficacious to turn for enduring strength to a "higher power" that sort of already comes with a whole, readily accessible theological system attached to it, if you see what I mean. Do you know if a vague "higher power" is or isn't as helpful to drug addicts and alcoholics as, say, Christ or Allah (or working within the Buddhist system, or whatever).

John Shore Replied:
I wonder if drug addicts and alcoholics tend to remain sober longer--or have an easier time remaining sober--if their "higher power" is one that is defined by a traditional religion. I wonder, in other words, if it's easier to say sober if your God is Christ, or Allah, say, than if you're basically having to make-up the qualities and definitions of your "higher power" as you.

John, Only in a society that still has an unconscious (or semi-conscious) acceptance of child sexual abuse, could we defend such actions. We go on tirades about "scum of the earth perverts" with images of weird guys in trench coats. As a therapist who has been treating the effects of child abuse for more than 40 years, the face of abuse is as likely as not the one we see in the mirror.
