Just a sidelight, John. Not quite off-topic. You may recall the Godfather movie. The famous horse head scene with the director who wouldn't let Johnny Fontaine star in his new movie. So Tom Hagen goes to his mansion to make him an offer he can't refuse. And in the house, you see at the top of the stairs a teen-age girl in makeup and a sexy dress with her mother. I'm sure that's based on Polansky

In the book, that whole scene with the daughter and her mother is deeply disturbing. I don't remember it so much from the movie, but from the book it's something I've never forgotten. It's BAD, man.

Good piece. Polankski confuses repentance with enlightenment. Regardless, even repentance does not erase the consequences of using the unwitting for personal pleasure. However the girl's life turned out, it was made different by his perversity. His defenders are co-conspirators.
