Through two distinct graduate programs (i.e. Microbiology & Immunology and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology) our faculty is responsible for teaching and training both Ph.D. and M.S. level students for research careers in a number of disciplines. The faculty also plays a major role in teaching both Medical students and Physician Assistant students.

Our faculty is internationally recognized for their research and, has received five Research Career Development Awards, four fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany and a MERIT award from the National Institute on Aging. Our faculty members serve as consultants for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, chair and participate in peer-review study sections and review panels for the National Institute of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Veteran Affairs, the Department of Defense and other public and private agencies. Faculty members also participate on editorial boards and are selected to chair national and international meetings, and elected to hold offices in national societies.

Department research efforts are linked to major health issues such as coronary artery disease, abnormalities in cholesterol metabolism, diabetes, and cancer. Our research spans a wide spectrum from basic biological investigations to applied biotechnology and the development of new pharmaceutical for clinical trials. Many of our research projects also involve faculty members from other basic science and clinical departments and institutes.
