DENTON (UNT), Texas -- By correctly identifying states that border Texas and the rivers that separate Texas from its neighbors, Denton County residents can win prizes after spinning the Geography Wheel of Knowledge at this year's North Central Texas Geographic Information Systems Day and GIS Job Fair at the University of North Texas.

GIS Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17 (Tuesday) on the first floor of UNT's Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building, located on the northwest corner of Avenue C and West Mulberry Street. Those who attend the event will learn how cities and counties use GIS technology and how it has evolved.

Geographic information systems, which link items displayed on a map to records in a database, with the answers displayed on a map, are used by city and county managers to route sanitation and emergency vehicles, replace water mains, view aerial photography of the city or county and support  property records management and taxation services, among other applications.

During the day, representatives from cities, counties and governmental organizations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will demonstrate how they use GIS technology to manage operations of their jurisdictions and display their GIS maps. Companies that provide the technology to the cities and counties will also be represented.

In addition to the Geography Wheel of Knowledge, a student poster competition is part of North Central Texas GIS Day. Students from UNT and other area universities will submit displays of their GIS-related projects or research, and those attending the event will view and vote on the posters via ballots provided by the UNT Department of Geography. The first-, second- and third-place finishers will all receive prizes.

In addition, the day will include a job fair for students to make connections to local employers.

The day is hosted by the North Central Texas Council of Governments, Metroplex Arc User Group and the South Central Arc Users Group as well as UNT. For more information, contact Rob Wachal at 972-835-0201 or rwachal@highlandvillage.org.
