What is a Human Services Technician for CPS?

The Human Services Technician assists agency staff and supervisors in providing human services to CPS clients, as well as prepares and maintains statistical records, case controls systems, case records, and related files for their unit.

This position offers a lot of variety.  You will interact with various levels of agency staff and your support will be very important to families.  It will also be key to the agency’s success.  No day will likely be the same! 

In many ways, your efforts will have a significant impact on children and families because of your interaction with them.

What kinds of things will be expected of me?

  • Transport clients, primarily children, in your personal vehicle.
  • Guard against verbal abuse by children or parents who may be angry about the situation.
  • Work under pressure when quick response is needed in a crisis situation.
  • Maintain a balance of objectivity and empathic understanding in dealing with families living in stressful situations and with “caretakers” who have abused children in their care.
  • Work as part of a team, which involves helping with crisis situations relating to other unit’s assignments.
  • Document and organize case related information in both a paper and an automated system.
  • Perform various clerical duties such as typing, filing, faxing, copying, answering/receiving telephone inquiries, etc.

Do I have to have a degree?

No, to be a Human Services Technician you do not need a college degree. 

What would my salary be?

This position may be filled at any level from a Human Service Technician III. The starting salary range is $1,975.83 to $2,864.91 per month and will be based on the qualifications of the selected applicant.

I think I could do this job, but will I get specifically trained on what to do?

YES, specific training is currently in development for this job.  And though you will be transporting and supervising clients on your own, you will have ongoing support from caseworkers and your supervisor any time you need it.

Condition of Employment

Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License.  CPS will also request a Criminal Background Check and CPS History check on all applicants.
