The Texas Senate began audiotaping public committee hearings and floor debates with the 4th Called Session of the 62nd Legislature (1972). The tapes are a unique and invaluable record of Senate activity. There was no systematic record of the proceedings before the taping program was implemented.

The tapes from 1972 through the 77th Legislature (2001) are housed at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. More recent tapes are held by Senate Staff Services.

The recordings were made on cassette tapes that varied both by manufacturers and quality. Many of the tapes have already outlived their anticipated lifespan. The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has begun the task of digitizing the tapes, beginning with those from the earliest legislative sessions. Once digitized, access to the original tape is restricted. The files, however, will be posted to this Web site as soon as possible.

For additional information concerning the Senate tapes and obtaining copies of non-digitized recordings, please contact staff at 512-463-5455 or e-mail the Reference Desk.
