Featured Event October 10, 2009Government Canyon SNADutch Oven Cooking — Members of the San Antonio Chuck Wagon Gang Chapter of the Lone Star Dutch Oven Society will demonstrate how to cook in a Dutch oven. Help them prepare various delicacies then sample the outcome. This event will take place at the covered pavilion, so come prepared to be outside for several hours. Open to all ages, but participation is limited. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring plenty of drinking water. 9 a.m.-noon; fee $3 per person for supplies payable to the presenters; reservations required and will be accepted beginning at noon September10, 2009 and ending at noon October 9, 2009. Featured Event October 11, 2009World Birding Center - Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley SPThe Big Sit — Join the team at the park as we enter the nationwide Big Sit, coordinated by Bird Watcher's Digest. Help us measure up against rivals in the Valley, around the state, and across the country as we identify as many bird species as possible in a single day, from within a 17-foot diameter circle located atop the hawk tower. Featured Event October 16–17, 2009Washington-on-the-Brazos SHSStorytellin' at the Tavern — Hear tale telling and yarn spinning in the finest tradition of the old-time Texians. Featured Event October 17, 2009Colorado Bend SPFall Friends Festival — The Friends of Colorado Bend State Park invite you to come enjoy the Hill Country autumn on the banks of the Colorado River. Among the many activities offered throughout the day are nature and mountain bike (bring your own bike) tours and kayaking. Featured Event October 17, 2009Enchanted Rock SNA18th Annual Granite Gripper Climbing Competition — This competition is for climbers of all ages and abilities, featuring roped and bouldering categories. The event is completely coordinated by the Friends of Enchanted Rock. Festivities include a raffle, silent auction, dinner and an awards ceremony capped off by an evening slide show presentation. Featured Event October 17, 2009Fort Richardson SP&HS & Lost Creek Reservoir State TrailwayRed Steagall Wagon Train and Doc Wood — The park will be the starting point of Red Steagall's annual wagon train journey to Fort Worth. See the wagons as they start arriving Saturday afternoon. Stay and enjoy Cowboy Poetry featuring the renowned Doc Woods and others on the steps of the historic hospital. Featured Event October 17, 2009Lake Mineral Wells SP & Trailway13th Annual North Texas Skywatch Amateur Astronomer's Star Party — "The stars at night are big and bright ". Learn more about one of Texas' best natural resources the night sky. The star party is designed for amateur astronomers to get together and share ideas and experiences, learn new techniques, swap equipment and observe in a dark sky location. There will be a beginner's astronomy slide presentation at sunset. All park visitors are welcome and can learn about astronomy and to have a chance to see the night sky through a wide variety of telescopes. Featured Event October 17–18, 2009Hueco Tanks SP&HS15th Annual Interpretive Fair — See history and culture come alive at one of El Paso's most unique natural areas. Attractions of the two-day event will include Native American dancing and drumming, a Buffalo Soldier encampment, Folklorico dancers, pictograph and birding tours, climbing demonstrations, environmental and cultural information booths, an evening program and food, music, art, gifts and books for sale. Featured Event October 18, 24–25, 2009/1990Government Canyon SNACamp With A Ranger — Join Staff Interpreter John Koepke on this very special overnight backpack trip into the heart of the Government Canyon Backcountry! Along the way you'll learn the history of Government Canyon, get tips and tricks for backpacking and backcountry travel, capped off by a unique opportunity to pitch your tent under the stars in the midst of this awesome natural area. Pack your rucksack for fun and adventure in San Antonio's largest expanse of urban wilderness! There is a pre-trip meeting October 18, 10 a.m.-noon you must attend prior to the campout. Open to adults 18 or older with previous backpacking experience; group size limited to 12; no pets please.
