NAEP Activities

NAEP staff are analyzing data from the 2009 NAEP assessments for release this fall and in early 2010. Reports released in recent years are listed below. See a schedule of recent and future assessments as well as a chronology of NAEP assessments. Use the links below to learn about the upcoming and recent NAEP assessments.

NAEP 2010

From January 25 through March 5, 2010, NAEP will administer national assessments in civics, geography, and U.S. history at grades 4, 8, and 12. Concurrently, a national pilot test in writing will also be administered at grades 4, 8, and 12. The grade 8 and 12 writing pilot will be computer-based. NAEP will also conduct a special study in mathematics at grades 4 and 8.

Because these assessments and studies will be conducted at the national level only, no state results will be reported. National results for the civics, geography, and U.S. history assessments will be available in 2011.

NAEP 2009

From late January to early March of 2009, the NAEP 2009 assessments in mathematics, reading, and science were administered to students in grades 4, 8, and 12. More than 7,000 NAEP staff administered the assessment in more than 19,000 public and private schools in each state and the nation. Also, several states volunteered to participate in the first-ever NAEP state assessment at grade 12 in mathematics and reading.

NAEP is required to conduct state assessments in mathematics and reading in grades 4 and 8 in public schools; mathematics results will be reported in the fall of 2009 in The Nation's Report Card. Results
from the reading and science assessments and from grade 12 mathematics will be reported later.

The National Indian Education Study (NIES) was also conducted, as in 2005 and 2007. See information about the 2009 assessment in the NIES flyer (775KB PDF). Also, a subset of high schools was selected to participate in the High School Transcript Study (HSTS). In schools selected for the HSTS, transcripts will be collected in spring and summer 2009, after the administration of NAEP. In addition, various special studies may occur in a few schools.
