AAALAC Council member Richard B. Huneke honored as Veterinarian of the Year by the Delaware Valley Branch of AALAS

On September 9, 2009, the Delaware Valley Branch of AALAS (American Association for Laboratory Animal Science) honored Richard B. Huneke, DVM, MPH, with the Veterinarian of the Year Award.  This award is offered for outstanding accomplishment by a Veterinarian who is active in the DVB AALAS community and sponsored by TotalMRO. 

Selection for the award is based on demonstrated involvement in DVB AALAS, demonstrated interest in the improvement of care, quality, and environment of animals used in biologic and medical research, and contribution to and accomplishments for education, training, or animal care in the field of lab animal science.  The DVBAALAS membership consists of members from more than 50 research institutions in the eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware area. Dr. Huneke currently serves as the Executive Director, ULAR Drexel University College of Medicine. Congratulations!

Dr. Kathryn Bayne
, Global Director, received the AVMA Animal Welfare Award. This award is given annually to an AVMA member veterinarian to recognize his or her achievements in advancing the welfare of animals via leadership, public service, education, research/product development, and/or advocacy. By doing so, the AVMA hopes to raise public awareness of the important role veterinarians play in improving understanding of animal welfare-related science and ethics; ensuring that animal use for human purposes is conducted responsibly; and attending to and promoting animal welfare within the context of responsible animal use.

Dr. John Miller
, Executive Director Emeritus, received the Charles River Prize for contributions to the field of laboratory animal medicine and science. This award was created to recognize distinguished contributions to, and to promote educational growth in, laboratory animal science. Nominees are first reviewed by the Charles River Laboratories Foundation, and the final recipient is selected by the AVMA Executive Board.

Carol FoxCarol Fox named the 2009 U.K. recipient of the AAALAC International Technician Fellowship Award

Carol Fox, FIAT, RAnTech, is the 2009 U.K. recipient of the AAALAC International Technician Fellowship Award. Fox is the Quality & Training Coordinator for Pfizer Global R&D - Comparative Medicine, and also works for The Learning Curve where she provides training and personal development for scientists, animal technicians and support staff. Prior to these positions she was an Area Supervisor for Pfizer R&D Animal Resources, and as a Unit Supervisor and Senior Technician for the Wellcome Foundation. From the moment she started her career as a Junior Animal Technician at Kings College, Fox has viewed her job as a "dedication, passion and career." She is a member of IAT and has served on the organization's Council as a Continuing Professional Development Officer, and for 12 years on its Certification Examination Board. AAALAC Executive Director Emeritus John G. Miller receives ACLAM's "Nathan R. Brewer Career Achievement Award in Laboratory Animal Medicine"

At a ceremony in April, ACLAM (the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine) awarded its Nathan R. Brewer Award to AAALAC Executive Director Emeritus John G. Miller. The award is given based on "rare and exceptional contributions to the field of laboratory/comparative medicine which have accrued over the bulk of the professional career."  This award is the highest level award bestowed by ACLAM and is given on an infrequent basis. Dr. Miller served as AAALAC's Executive Director from 1996-2008. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Miller!

On March 29, nearly 400 veterinarians, researchers and administrators participated in the 2009 AAALAC International Conference on Quality Animal Care held in San Diego, CA, in conjunction with the 2009 PRIM&R IACUC Conference.   The conference presented trends found during AAALAC site visits conducted over the last five years, along with examples of best practices and plenty of opportunity for questions and answers.  Thanks to all who attended and made the conference such a tremendous success!

The entire conference will be available on DVD in May, and the disk will include all presentations synched with audio. 


MontipDr. Montip Gettayacamin joins AAALAC International as Regional Director for Southeast Asia

AAALAC International has appointed Montip Gettayacamin, D.V.M., DACLAM, as Regional Director for Southeast Asia.  In this position, Dr. Gettayacamin will direct AAALAC’s programs and services throughout the region.  Dr. Gettayacamin is based in AAALAC International’s new Southeast Asia office located in Samutprakarn, Thailand.

Dr. Gettayacamin brings outstanding experience to the position of Regional Director, and AAALAC is pleased to have someone with her background and expertise who can provide service to Southeast Asian institutions that are interested in earning AAALAC International accreditation. 

Dr. Gettayacamin received her veterinary degree from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand (1984) and is a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (2003).  She is a former AAALAC International ad hoc Specialist and a former member of AAALAC International’s Council on Accreditation.

She has served as Assistant Chief, Research and Laboratory Animal Medicine, Department of Veterinary Medicine, United States Army Medical Component, Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences (USAMC-AFRIMS), in Bangkok, Thailand.  Dr. Montip has 24 years of experience at AFRIMS in laboratory animal facility management and veterinary medicine.  She has conducted biomedical research studies and developed various animal models for tropical diseases of military importance, including malaria, dengue hemorrhagic fever, Shigellosis, and zoonotic diseases.  She has authored or coauthored 37 scientific publications.
