RABIES AND BATS
If you’ve ever woken up to a bat doing fast, low swoops over your bed, you’re familiar with that sudden quandary, “What do I do now?”  What you do next is actually very important.  Not only do you have to remove yourself from the threat of contact, but you also have to see to it the bat is captured so it can be tested for rabies.  Regardless if the capture is done by you, an emergency responder, or a professional wildlife handler, proper handling of this specimen is essential to preserve it for testing, and to ensure personal protection.

BAG ’EM & BOX ’EM, WILD CATS GET THEIR RABIES SHOTS

Wild or “feral” cats can be a handful.  But capturing them temporarily — in boxes, sheets or pillowcases — and making sure they get a rabies vaccine at one of the county’s free rabies clinics is a recommended step to help lower the risk of rabies around the home.  (Pictured (l to r) is Veterinarian Diane Gabriel of Califon) Animal Hospital, assisted by Robin Dietz, preparing to vaccinate a wild cat at a clinic in Lebanon Township.  At the 29 free rabies clinics already held this year more than 1,733 dogs and 861 cats have been vaccinated.  Feral cats present a unique threat because many will “adopt” owners by showing up for nightly dinner; plenty of good-hearted residents feed these “pets.”  But because such cats spend their lives in the wild yet come into close contact with humans, they are at higher risk for contracting and possibly passing on the rabies virus, a dangerous disease that is endemic in the county.
