The Norman Mineta Tribute

Photograph of Norman Mineta

The Norman Mineta Project at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program included a major tribute to Norman Mineta on February 6, 2007 in the Great Hall of the Smithsonian Castle.

Five hundred people gathered to celebrate a life filled with enormous achievements, including public service ranging from serving as Mayor of San Jose, California, through decades of accomplishment in the House of Representatives, as well as many years on the Smithsonian Board of Regents. Mineta has the distinction of having been in the Cabinets of both Democratic President William Jefferson Clinton and Republican President George Walker Bush.

At the tribute, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery announced that it would commission a portrait of Secretary Mineta for its collections.
