Buffalo Bill Historic Center (BBHC)

On loan:  Thomas Moran’s The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Loaned by:  Smithsonian American Art Museum

More than eight feet high, fourteen feet long and weighing approximately 300 pounds, The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, is a masterpiece by Thomas Moran, one of America’s most renowned 19th century landscape artists.  In a journey from east to west, the monumental painting slowly made its way from the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC to the Buffalo Bill Historic Center in Cody, Wyoming where it is currently part of the Whitney Gallery of Western Art’s 50th Anniversary celebration until October 31, 2009.

“What a rare and extraordinary privilege for our visitors to connect with Thomas ‘Yellowstone’ Moran’s Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and then to see the landscape that inspired it as they travel in Yellowstone,” says Alan Simpson, former U.S. Senator from Wyoming and the historical center’s chairman of the board of trustees.
